The National Conference of Bishops of Brazil has published a pamphlet in which they propose World Youth Day 2015 be held in their country, with possible host cities being Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, or Rio de Janeiro.
World Youth Day, which is held every three years, should take place in 2014 but the bishops say 2015 would be more convenient as it is possible that in 2014 Brazil may host the World Cup of Soccer. The bishops said holding the event in 2013 would be unrealistic as preparations for the World Cup would be absorbing resources.
President Lula da Silva has expressed his support of the idea. The next World Youth Day will be held in Sydney, Australia, in 2008.
