Catholic News Agency provides reliable, free, up-to-the-minute news affecting the Universal Church, giving particular emphasis to the words of the Holy Father and happenings of the Holy See, to any person with access to the internet. A service of EWTN News, CNA is proud to offer free access to the latest news items for Catholic dioceses, parishes, and websites, in order to increase awareness of the activities of the universal Church and to foster a sense of Catholic thought and culture in the life of every Catholic. Though its focus is spread throughout the world, CNA closely covers the Catholic Church in the United States and news related to the creation of a culture of life.
Origins
As of June 19, 2014, Catholic News Agency is owned and operated by EWTN. Founded in 1981, EWTN Global Catholic Network is available in over 160 million television households in more than 140 countries and territories. With its direct broadcast satellite television and radio services, AM & FM radio networks, worldwide shortwave radio station, Internet website and publishing arm, EWTN is the largest religious media network in the world.
Catholic News Agency (www.catholicnewsagency.com) was founded in 2004, in response to Pope St. John Paul II’s call for a “New Evangelization." It is one of the fastest-growing Catholic news providers in the world. The Catholic News Agency's roots begin with its sister agency, ACI Prensa, which was founded in Lima, Peru, in 1980 by Fr. Adalbert Marie Mohm (†1986)
Fr. Mohm, a German missionary, wanted to provide a steady flow of Catholic news to the secular media and to news readers, in order to increase the visibility of the Catholic Church in the public square and to help serve its mission.
Today ACI Prensa (www.aciprensa.com) is the largest and most visited online source of Catholic news in Spanish and Portuguese.
In 2014, Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN), the world’s largest distributor of Catholic content, acquired Catholic News Agency and ACI Prensa. Since the merger, CNA and ACI Prensa have expanded their distribution platform.
In accord with its goal to provide Catholic news free of charge, CNA and ACI Prensa are funded, almost entirely, by gifts from our readers and benefactors.
