Chilean bishop encourages collaboration between political parties

Bishop Alejandro Goic, president of the Chilean bishops' conference met with the newly-elected president of the country, Sebastian Pinera and expressed his desire for the new government to collaborate with opposing political parties to create a more just, fraternal and unified country.

Speaking to reporters, Bishop Goic emphasized the gesture of Pinera's opponent, Eduardo Frei, as he conceded defeat.  “That indicated that Chile indeed has a solid and deep democracy. We trust that everyone will continue working to make our country a more fraternal, unified, just and equitable nation.”

“We hope that opposition, which is an expression of democracy, will also be constructive,” the bishop added.

The prelate noted that, “following a noble tradition, we have come to greet the president-elect and convey our desire for God’s blessing upon the very complex, and at the same time, challenging task of serving Chile.”

“From our pastoral perspective, we wish to continue contributing to the well-being of Chile with the strength of Jesus Christ and the Gospel, which for us is essential,” he said.
