Caritas Italy collecting aid for victims of conflict in Georgia

The Bishops’ Conference of Italy has tasked Caritas with organizing two days of prayer and solidarity for the victims of the conflict in Georgia, particularly for the people of South Ossetia, on the Sundays of August 24 and 31.  The funds raised will be used to help with reconstruction in the country.

Caritas Italy has already set aside $148,000 for aid, half of which has already been sent to provide food and medical supplies.  Caritas workers in Georgia report they have had difficulties bring aid to those affected by the ongoing conflict.

According to the L’Osservatore Romano, the director of Caritas Georgia, Father Witold Szulczynski, is seeking to increase the aid being distributed in South Ossetia, where some 800,000 are receiving assistance.

He told LOR that young people in the area are providing much needed assistance in distributing aid.
