Book Reviews2 Annotating the Scriptures? This new Bible will provide plenty of room… and inspiration

Annotated Bible/ Ave Maria Press

Most of us Catholics have a love relationship with that worn down, annotated, highlighted and dog-eared Bible. That unique Bible is not only the Word of God in our hands, it is also a sign of our spiritual journey, a testimony of our most intimate conversations with God.

Ave Maria Press, the 155-year-old apostolate of the Holy Cross, finally figured out that “a Bible is like a special room where you can have a personal conversation with God,” and has released the “Ave Catholic Notetaking Bible.”

The concept is truly original, even in the growing world of amazing Catholic Bibles. Using the Revised Standard Version Second Catholic Edition, this clothbound hard cover book (which also comes in imitation leather) presents all the books of the Bible printed in a single column, deliberately leaving ample margins to invite the writing of notes, prayers, personal resolutions or even the occasional doodle.

In the words of the editors: this creative edition “allows you to live in your Bible and create a scrapbook of your relationship with the Lord.”

The Ave Catholic Notetaking Bible also finds room in the lower corner of each page to feature comprehensive references to the Catechism of the Catholic Church without looking clogged, and guaranteeing a truly Catholic reading of the Word of God.

Brief but enlightening introductions are completed with simple reading plans for the different liturgical seasons, a one-year Bible chronological reading plan, and inspiring commentaries from reliable Catholic authors.

Among them, “Eight steps to becoming a Bible Reader” from Mark Hart, the “Bible Geek,” is specifically addressed to young new Bible readers.

I am sure this will make a perfect Easter gift to my Millennial goddaughter.
